How to Make a Glitter Bomb: 4 Friendly Glitter Pranks

A friendly glitter bomb is a confetti surprise you hand to a friend in person: a card, a balloon, a box or a book that pops open to paper dots. Skip loose fine glitter. It can scratch eyes and it spreads for weeks. Here are four easy ones and how to clean up.

Updated for 2026. This guide replaces our 2013 ceiling fan glitter trick, which blows glitter toward faces.

Why we use paper dots, not fine glitter

Fine glitter is a mess you cannot take back. It also hurts. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that glitter in the eye “can scratch the cornea and even cause an infection.” Paper dots, large biodegradable confetti and chunky craft pieces fall faster, are easy to see and are easy to vacuum.

Two more rules:

  • Hand it over in person.
  • Do it for a friend who will laugh. If you are not sure, give them something kind instead.

What you need

4 friendly glitter pranks

1. The confetti card

  1. Punch a handful of dots from colored paper, or measure out a spoonful of large confetti.
  2. Tuck them loose into the fold of a blank card, held in place by a thin strip of tape on the inside edge.
  3. Write one line inside: “Surprise. I will help you clean this up.”

Hand it over at a table so the dots land on the table. It works for a birthday, a thank you or no reason at all.

2. The confetti balloon

  1. Roll a small stack of paper dots into a funnel and feed them into a clear balloon.
  2. Inflate it, tie it and tape a note to the string: “Pop me outside.”

Hand it over and let your friend pop it outdoors, at arm’s length, away from their face. Pick up the balloon pieces afterward, since loose latex is a hazard for small children and pets.

3. The surprise box

  1. Line a small gift box with tissue paper and pour the dots under the top sheet.
  2. Close the lid, tie a bow and put a tag on the front that says “Open with care.”

When your friend lifts the tissue, the dots fly up. Tuck a card inside so they know it is you.

4. The confetti book

  1. Pick a book your friend wants to read and slip a thin line of paper dots into the pages, a few at a time.
  2. Put a sticky note on the cover: “Chapter one: surprise.”

Your friend opens it, laughs and shakes the book out over the trash. It is the easiest one to clean.

Rather skip the making?

If you would rather not make one, a mailing service can send a glitter card to a friend’s home, with the glitter sealed inside until they open it. See the glitter card at GlitterBombTrap, a HowToRevenge shop. Whatever you choose, send one to one friend, and stop if they ask.

Clean-up in five steps

  1. Offer to help. Your friend should not have to clean alone.
  2. Pick up the big pieces by hand. Dots and confetti come up fast.
  3. Vacuum with a brush attachment. Skip the broom, which pushes dots around.
  4. Roll a lint roller over fabric. It works on couches, coats and carpet edges.
  5. Wipe hard floors with a damp cloth. Any leftover glitter sticks to it.

What to skip

  • Glitter in a fan, a vent or a blower. It sends glitter toward faces.
  • Glitter in someone’s room, bed, laundry or pockets. It damages things and makes a mess they clean up for real.
  • A booby-trapped package left for a stranger. You cannot know who opens it, and it can hurt someone you did not mean.
  • Anything that looks like a real bill, legal paper or government notice.
  • Anything near the face of a child, a pet or a person who has not agreed to the joke.

More safe ideas are on the fake everything page. For kids, homemade slime is a good place to start, and our article on prank boxes covers the store-bought kind.

FAQ

How do you make a glitter bomb?

Make a friendly one with paper dots instead of fine glitter. Punch dots from colored paper or buy large biodegradable confetti, tuck them into a card, a balloon, a box or a book, and hand it to a friend in person. Tell them it is a joke and offer to help clean up.

What are some glitter prank ideas?

A confetti card, a confetti balloon, a surprise box and a confetti book are four easy ones. Each uses paper dots, hands over in person and ends with a laugh and a clean-up you do together. Skip anything with fine loose glitter, a fan or a stranger.

What can I use instead of loose glitter?

Use paper dots from a hole punch, large biodegradable confetti or chunky craft pieces. They fall fast, show up well and vacuum up easily. Fine glitter spreads, sticks to everything and can scratch an eye, so keep it out of pranks that go near anyone’s face.

How do you clean up glitter or confetti?

Pick up the big pieces by hand, vacuum with a brush attachment, roll a lint roller over fabric and wipe hard floors with a damp cloth. Skip the broom. Offer to do the clean-up with your friend, since a prank is only funny if you share the work.
